On 1 January 2025, the new 4TU.AMI Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) 'Real-World-Inspired Sequential Decision-Making' was launched. We interviewed the project leaders Anne Zander and Janusz Meylahn (both UT).

On March 7th, the UT hosted a workshop for high school teachers in mathematics and computer science on artificial intelligence (AI) in medical imaging. Similar educational material for high-school teachers and students is being developed.

Since September 1, 2024, Nicos Starreveld has been appointed as the national Communications, Outreach, and PR Officer for Platform Wiskunde Nederland (PWN). In this role, Nicos has been instrumental in supporting the 4TU.AMI bureau and the 4TU.AMI Strategic Research Initiatives (SRIs) with communication and outreach strategies. He is also fostering collaboration between 4TU.AMI and PWN to initiate joint activities that will benefit the broader mathematics community in the Netherlands.

Each year, thousands of people compete in the MATH+ Advent Calendar, a digital mathematics competition organised in December by the Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+ in collaboration with 4TU.AMI.

In a vibrant and forward-looking conversation, Stella Kapodistria (TU/e), the newly appointed scientific director of 4TU.AMI, and her predecessor Johann Hurink (UT) shared insights into the transition of leadership within the institute. The discussion revealed a shared commitment to maintaining the institute's strong foundation while pushing forward into new territories. The atmosphere was charged with energy as both leaders expressed a unified vision for the future of 4TU.AMI.

One of the two current Strategic Research Initiatives (SRIs) of the 4TU.Applied Mathematics Institute is called 'Bridging Numerical Analysis and Machine Learning'. Co-founder Dr. Alexander Heinlein is busy organising the SRI’s next workshop, taking place in Delft on 25 and 26 April. His aim: create a solid foundation for Dutch initiatives in the field of scientific machine learning.

After his outstanding achievement in the 2021 edition of the annual Mathekalender, Max Tinkelenberg has successfully defended his title as the top-scoring Dutch high school student participating in the calendar. In fact, not only did Max outperform all the other Dutch participants, he became the joint overall winner of the Mathekalender 2022.

Recently, the 4TU.Federation announced that a number of its centres and institutes will join forces with the University of Groningen (UG).

The team Robo Go'round -with UT PhD student Tjeerd Jan Heeringa as one of its members- were the overall winners of the SIAM 2023 hackathon, which was held as part of the Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE23) in Amsterdam.
