Supporting international students: how to turn fear of failure into competency
International students are confronted with various challenges and opportunities when moving abroad: increased stress, isolation, anxiety and difficulties, while adjusting to a very different environment. The already academically challenged intercultural learner may have to invest an enormous amount of extra mental energy in re-evaluating initial academic choices and in coming to terms with the fact that he or she may have to give up cherished goals and aspirations. How can staff, lecturers, and counsellors prevent a downward spiral and focus on the potential of students' talents?
This training will explore how teaching and counselling staff can help students stabilise their self-esteem and cope with the emotions triggered by real or perceived failure. After exploring crucial themes such as culture and learning, acceptance of limitations, unconditional self-worth, and reframing failure into success, a number of effective applications for advisors and teachers will be introduced. Participants will be provided with strategies and interventions to be used when encountering such cases. In addition, practical tips for creating an inclusive, learning environment will be introduced.
You will develop
- Specific knowledge on how to identify warning signs that indicate risk among international students
- Culture-sensitive teaching and/or counselling skills; how to support international students overcome typical concerns about perceived underperformance
- Knowledge and understanding on special needs, and the so called “hidden special needs” that international students may have
- Specific guidelines on how to contribute to inclusive and successful academic environments that allow students to re-evaluate their academic goals.
