Project introduction and background information
Our society faces wicked problems, think of the grand challenges in food, healthcare and sustainability. These wicked problems are multi-faceted and so complex that no single approach suffices to find solutions.
That is why we need transdisciplinary professionals. These professionals can collaboratively transcend traditional boundaries like disciplines, practice and science. Within higher education, we can stimulate the development of transdisciplinary professionals.
Amongst others, transdisciplinary professionals need to be able to cross boundaries. That is why our research has boundary crossing theory at its center.
Objective and expected outcomes
This research studies transdisciplinary mixed classrooms. These are learning environments where students and professionals from different disciplines are co-learning. We want to know whether these mixed classrooms can support the development of boundary crossing competence in professionals and students. In addition, we will try to unravel principles contributing to such competence development.
