Project introduction and background information

Academic procrastination is a persistent and common problem that can lead to reduced study performance and negative effects on student well-being. There are various causes of procrastination that are reinforced by the increasing use of digital devices in education and beyond. Students who struggle with procrastination can receive support from a mentor, study advisor or student psychologist. This individualizes the problem, while its magnitude justifies a more integrated approach on programme level. This project aims to develop and evaluate such an approach as part of the ATLAS study program of the University College Twente.

A first study set out to explore students’ beliefs about what causes procrastination, the extent to which online education and the use of digital devices affects their level of procrastination, and their coping mechanisms and ideas about the kind of support a study program can offer to mitigate the effects of procrastination.
