TU/e inspirational workshop on Innovation Fund projects
On Monday January 27th the 4TU.CEE at TU/e organised a workshop to inspire TU/e teachers to propose new projects on innovation in education. The workshop was organised with reference to the call for proposals 2020. During the workshop four previously funded projects were exhibited. The project owners presented posters on their projects in a market setting and answered questions of participants. The four projects are:
- Mobile Learning for challenge-based education
- BULB, Bright Use of the Light Board
- Interdisciplinary presentations in Bachelor End Projects
- Enhancing bachelor student’s ownership in hands-on education: the case of mechanical engineering
After the poster session a panel discussion took place on innovations in education in relation to the TU/e Education Vision 2030. The members of the panel were Lex Lemmens (dean of the bachelor college), Gerrit Kroesen (dean department of Applied Physics) and Carijn Mulder (student and team manager TU/e Solar Team 2019). The workshop participants actively took part in the lively discussion on what kinds of projects are considered inspiring and useful. It was also discussed that innovation projects should be evidence-based, in line with the Education Vision 2030.
The first part of the discussion focused on the necessity of being able to apply the knowledge to be gained. It was said that academics enjoy learning and gathering knowledge as a goal in itself, where personal development is the main reason for learning. At the same time, TU/e is a technical university, and key to the engineering education is applying this knowledge. Not only teach students about a model, but preparing them to design the next model and subsequently empirically prove it.
In the second part of the discussion it was indicated that in order to change the curriculum, you will need to work together. To not only change one course but to research the effects of this change. This is important input for other courses since they interconnect. Furthermore, with growing student numbers, up-scaling of innovations should also be possible.
The session ended with a network lunch. Since there were many new colleagues among the participants, from a broad range of faculties, this was a fruitful setting to make new contacts.
We would like to thank everybody who contributed to this inspirational morning! This workshop will be followed by a network morning on 11 June for everybody at TU/e who is working on a project funded by the 4TU.CEE Innovation Fund
