HOW DO TEACHERS AND STUDENTS FEEL ABOUT ONLINE TEACHING IN TIMES OF CORONA?

The corona situation has forced an abrupt transition to online education in many institutions. Postdoc Tim Stevens aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the transition to online education and map factors that shape the adoption of online tools and methods at WUR. Preliminary results show that teachers were not happy with ‘being forced’ to fully teach online. However they were able to teach the course to their own satisfaction. Read more…

FIRST CERTIFIED LEARNING ASSISTANTS AT UT

The University of Twente has done a successful pilot with new and more extended didactical training for Learning Assistants (LAs). Last week the first three LA’s received their certificate from the rector. Student assistants have sufficient content expertise but many can improve on didactical skills according to UT students. This is why a LA trajectory was set up. It focuses on didactical principles and didactical reasoning and prepares LAs for their current and future tasks. Read more…

WHAT DO TEACHERS LEARN DURING THE INNOVATION OF THEIR EDUCATION?

Research on teacher professional learning and development in higher education is still in its infancy. New NWO research intends to change that by investigating what and how teachers learn when they innovate their own courses. The research is funded by NRO, a sub department from NWO especially focused on research in education. 4TU.CEE is strongly involved in the project, with professor Jan Vermunt (TU/e) and professor Perry den Brok (WUR) as project leader and assisting project leader, respectively. PRACTICAL QUANTUM PROGRAMMING EDUCATION FOR ENGINEERS

Quantum computing is an emerging computer technology that has the potential to revolutionise the way we will be solving computational problems in the future. Quantum computers are so much different from today’s digital computers that it needs more than just the clever reimplementation of established algorithms on new computer hardware. Matthias Möller, assistant professor at TU Delft, is developing ready-to-use novel algorithms for next-generation computer-aided engineering tools together with a team of students. REVIEW STUDY ON INTERDISCIPLINARY ENGINEERING EDUCATION PUBLISHED

A 4TU.CEE review study on interdisciplinary engineering education was published in the Journal of Engineering Education.

Societal challenges that call for a new type of engineer suggest the need for the implementation of interdisciplinary engineering education (IEE). The aim of IEE is to train engineering students to bring together expertise from different disciplines in a single context. This review synthesizes IEE research with a focus on characterizing vision, teaching practices, and support.
