We've become dependent on big tech. Day in, day out we use services provided by Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple, and Amazon. While we enjoy their services to live our comfortable Western lives, we pay with our digital identities. These companies create profiles so intricate, that they give their clients the power to nudge your behaviour, influence what you buy, or determine who you vote for. And we don't seem to have a choice. Taking steps to resolve this often requires profound technical knowledge. Claude makes this process easier through thoughtful design.
Do you really know where your data are stored?
Claude reshapes the future of the home server by adapting it to suit the decentralised internet, making privacy central. This is achieved by drawing inspiration from the self-hosting community, a community of people who have been developing and hosting alternatives to big tech companies. Using Claude, people create personal, home-hosted clouds, returning control to those who want to preserve their digital privacy. Claude consists of a simple plug-and-play server; a physical access wallet through which users gain or share access to files; and specialised apps which offer access spread over multiple servers. Most of the project's magic is found in its networking architecture which makes it possible to securely connect to a personal server without complex networking steps.
Privacy is essential to democracy because it allows individuals to remain honest and critical of the system without fear of repercussion. Traditionally, privacy is ensured by strong security measures and legislation. However, privacy by design takes this a step further by integrating privacy into the very way we create products and services. Unfortunately, the current form of the internet often threatens this fundamental right, making it crucial to embed privacy principles directly into the design process to better protect our personal data. Claude has been developed with privacy by design in mind, rearranging the traditional architecture of a cloud in a way that fits home users so that they can stay in charge of their data.
