Dataslip is all about our entanglements with personal data, often at the core of many AI systems. It invites attendees to 'disentangle' and critically reflect on their relationship with personal data, and to envision future alternatives. How can we make our personal data visible and contestable, while encouraging engagement with it?
As we navigate the physical and digital world, we unknowingly leave an immense trail of data. We are informed about this via lengthy documents such as privacy policies, or short statements such as cookie pop-ups. However, even when we know that data is collected, we remain largely unaware of its nature. What information does it contain and how does it relate to us? What does it look and feel like?
Dataslip is an interactive installation where the construct of personal data is translated into a material and tangible representation in the form of a `personal dataslip'. The dataslip was filled with accurate information requested from different product and service providers.
The aim of generating this physical and tangible dataslip is to reduce the distance between people and their personal data. This invites them to inspect, compare, wear, and reflect on the present and future of personal data collection. How far does your personal dataslip go? How far would you like it to go?
