Join Our Roundtable Presenting ‘responsibility as a practice’

A response to the gap between academia and reality
01/10/2024

Guest authors: Duuk Baten and John Walker

Parallel session VIII: Friday 4 October 16:00-17:30

In the rapidly evolving landscape of emerging technologies, we've developed a methodology for facilitating and building responsible technology practices. The catch is: how can we refine and implement this method effectively in real-world settings? This roundtable is more than just a presentation—it's a collaborative problem-solving session! We need your great minds to make this work possible.

As we navigate all of this ‘digital transformation’ together, educational institutions are asking a critical question:

How can we ensure that these technological advancements align with our public values?

Within SURF, the Dutch national research and education network, we try to support our member organisations (Dutch research and education institutions) in answering this question. And so we come to a situation where academic knowledge and expertise comes into contact with organisational practices and realities. How do we bridge the gap between those two worlds? In this roundtable we are looking to you to help us with something that isn't just an academic exercise—it's a call to action for philosophers, ethicists, technologists, educators, and researchers alike.

Our roundtable is designed as a collaborative inquiry, where we invite you—the 4TU.Ethics and ESDiT community— to come together and collaboratively explore how we can turn theoretical frameworks into actionable strategies. We're looking for your perspectives, expertise, and experiences to enrich this discussion. In our session, we hope you will take a critical view of our methodology, where you'll help our approach to responsible tech reflect current academic knowledge and real-world expertise.

To help navigate the ongoing digital transformation in education, Kennisnet and SURF developed the Value Compass—a framework for addressing public values in education, aimed at promoting a discussion beyond functionalities and costs to shared ambitions for digital education’s future.

For context, our educational institutions (our members) are interested in maintaining and perserving the 'public values'—those principles we hold so dear as a society that we institutionalize them. Want to know more, then check out our paper which describes this current context and our method.

The challenge continues to be: translating these values into the practical, day-to-day decisions that shape our technological landscape.

It's one thing to talk about responsible technology in theory; it's another to put it into practice. We're introducing the idea of 'responsibility as a practice' to our members—a skill that needs to be developed, honed, and actively exercised in our approach to emerging technologies.

By joining us, you'll not only contribute to refining our methodology but also help bridge the gap between academic ideals and real-world application. Don't miss this chance to be part of a fun dialogue that will influence how we approach responsible technology for years to come.

We are pleased to announce that if you join our roundtables, you’ll be welcomed by an incredible mixture of talents and backgrounds such as:

  • Olya Kudina – TU Delft: Assistant professor in Ethics of Technology. Co-lead AI DeMoS Lab.
  • Eliana Bergamin – Erasmus University Rotterdam: PhD Candidate - Erasmus AiPact
  • Frank Benneker – University of Amsterdam: Central Information Manager Education, developer of UvA-wide Responsible IT strategy
  • Sage Cammers-Goodwin – University of Twente: Postdoctoral Researcher for HOLDEN Project
  • Taylor Stone – TU Delft: Program and community manager TUD AI Initiative. PhD in Ethics of Technology from TUD.
  • John Walker – SURF (moderator): Responsible Tech Advisor, MSc Philosophy of Technology. Responsible XR advisor for national Npuls program.
