Profile

Having finished the Royal Military Academy and Military Flight School, I started my career as a helicopter pilot with the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Most of the time I combined flying with managing people. During 10 years of operational flying I have been on several missions abroad. Thereafter I have been working as a Flight Safety Manager and Human Factors Specialist at the Royal Netherlands Air Force Headquarters. I have completed a master in Work and Organizational Psychology at the Dutch Open University and also a master in Human Factors & System Safety at the School of Aviation at the University of Lund (Sweden). Currently I work as a assistant professor in Human Factors and System Safety at the Netherlands Defence Academy. PhD research I conduct on the social construction of safety in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). The main question to be answered in this research is whether regarding the establishment of safety as a social process can add to foresight and hindsight safety assessments and evaluations of these socio-technological systems.
