Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Ethics and Philosophy of Technology

Applications are sought for Ad Astra Fellow in Ethics and Philosophy of Technology within the UCD School of Philosophy
Date/deadline: Friday, 21 February 2025

The successful candidate will play a leading role in strategic research initiatives concerning theoretical, ethical and philosophical aspects of science, technology and society, including AI-related initiatives, new programmes and research centres. They will also contribute to UCD’s strategic initiative of establishing a new institute of AI and digital technology, and to the further development of digital technologies research, education, ethics and policy in the university.

The Ad Astra Fellow would be expected to teach some of our modules in theoretical and applied ethics at all undergraduate and graduate levels as well as supervising graduate and undergraduate dissertations in Ethics as well as Philosophy of Science and Technology. Currently the School has modules in level 1 Introduction to Ethics, level 2 Applied Ethics, MA Ethics in Public Life and professional micro-credentials in Ethics of AI and in New Technology and Responsible Innovation.

The School of Philosophy is the largest teaching and research centre in philosophy in Ireland and is ranked in the top 100 in the world QS global university rankings survey. The School, which is part of the College of Social Sciences and Law, has a pluralistic attitude towards philosophy and has research strengths in a variety of areas including the history of philosophy, contemporary European philosophy, social and political philosophy, metaphysics, cognitive science, and philosophy of mind and language. The School also hosts the Centre for Ethics in Public Life (CEPL) and the successful candidate will play a significant role in that Centre, including attracting research grant income for initiatives within the Centre involving the ethics of science and technology as well as supporting postdoctoral fellows.
