When people with cardiovascular diseases – in addition to their medication – eat according to the "Schijf van Vijf" and exercise for twenty minutes daily, they have a lower risk of a second heart attack.
People who have had a heart attack benefit from eating healthier, with more vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products, while consuming as little red and processed meat, sugary soft drinks, and salt as possible. These dietary recommendations apply to everyone, but it now appears that heart patients, in particular, can gain significant health benefits from them. By following these guidelines, they reduce the risk of a second heart attack. Sufficient physical activity and vitamin D are also beneficial for their health, according to research by Cruijsen among 4,800 heart patients.
