âSmart dustâ is a tiny dust size device with extra-ordinary capabilities. It has broad applications for localization, remote sensing, biomedical, IoT. âSmart dustâ is a world recognized frontier research topic and crossing discipline [1]. It combines wireless sensing, sensor network, wireless communication and autonomous power supply within volume of only few millimeters. Because the smart dust is in the order of few millimeters, the power supply is a crucial problem. The size of the power supply will limit the smart dust size. Moreover, the lifetime and the availability of the power supply will limit the smart dust application. Recent developments in microelectronics technology enabled harvesting power from radio frequency (RF) sources, which is quite sufficient to power a low-power embedded system in practice. The growth of the RF-powered computing paradigm brought new research opportunities and challenges in cloud based âsmart dustâ. We anticipate that RF-powered smart dust with cloud-based computing could bring the IoT into another level with extra smartness and lower cost.
