On March 7th , the University of Twente hosted a workshop for high school teachers in mathematics and computer science on artificial intelligence (AI) in medical imaging for the 4TU NIRICT Community grant.
The workshop began with an interactive lecture on convolutional neural networks (CNNs): what are they, and how can a computer interpret an image? In the programming session that followed, attendees could design their own CNN to detect whether a patient has pneumonia based on X-ray scans. At the end of the afternoon, Dieuwertje Alblas (University of Twente) presented her research on AI in three-dimensional medical imaging, showing how the newest research on AI can make a difference to doctors.
The workshop was positively received, and we plan several future initiatives. Plans are underway to host a similar workshop in Eindhoven before the summer, and in response to strong demand from teachers who were unable to attend, another workshop in Twente may be scheduled for October.
Next to that, we are developing AI-focused educational material for high school students which will enable them to learn about AI and medical imaging as well.
