The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland; RVO) subsidises companies who offer internships or other ways of learning on the job. These subsidies help compensate the costs associated with student supervision and salaries. Companies who work with PDEng trainees also qualify.
The fund in short: Companies can apply for the subsidy, regardless of whether the PDEng trainee is paid by the university or the company. They can receive compensation for each month the trainee worked on the project that academic year, to a maximum of € 2,700 per year. The application needs to be submitted by the end of each academic year. For example, if a student starts a one-year project in May, the company will get 4 months of subsidy that year and the remainder the next year.
Practical information:
- The submission period opens every year on June 2 and closes on September 15 at the latest. It is not possible to submit applications for previous years.
- The application needs to be submitted via https://mijn.rvo.nl/praktijkleren. The digital form uses the eHerkenning protocol, which needs to be set up in time – at least a week in advance.
- If the company and the university have a contract, no other documents need to be submitted.
How much compensation is available?
The amount of money a company receives is determined as follows: The number of contact hours/36 * the number of months/12 * € 2,700 = the final sum. 36 hours is the standard work week; if a trainee works longer hours, this part of the equation is still rounded to 1. If the total number of application exceeds the maximum budget, all companies may receive a reduced subsidy.
Example: A PDEng trainee who worked on an assignment for 8 months, 38 hours a week, would make the company eligible for a subsidy of 38/36 (rounded to 1) * 8/12 * 2700 = € 1,800
